September-October 2012. Watching Brief.
The excavation of a new sewer trench through the derelict warehouse to the rear of 9 Nelson Street exposed a brick wall of probable post-medieval date. This was almost certainly associated with one of the structures that can be seen extending from the rear of 9 Nelson Street on the late 19th-century Ordnance Survey 1:500 Town Plan map (S4). At this time the eastern end of the warehouse buildings stopped at least 20m short of where they do know, having been extended in the 20th century following the demolition of the buildings to the rear of 9 Nelson Street.
See NHER 62677 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 April 2018.

Listed Grade II*.
House, probably originally on courtyard plan, now a solicitors' office. Late 15th century, extensively rebuilt in the early 19th century. Probably timber-framed, the jetty underbuilt in gault brick and the first floor rendered and colourwashed. Plaintile roof. Façade in two storeys. Central doorway flanked by three early 19th century sash windows with glazing bars and gauged skewback arches. Within the doorway is a magnificent 15th century timber door and frame: door with studded vertical muntins set within a four-centred arched frame terminating in an ogee decorated with crockets and finial. In the spandrel is a carved pelican. A four-centred arch over and a classical frieze, probably 1703. A moulded timber string course divides the two floors. Upper storey grudgingly symmetrical. Central six-light transomed mullioned window in a slight projection flanked by two very late 17th century two-light cross casements each side. Façade closed at this level by an Ionic fluted pilaster right and left. Gabled roof with internal end stacks, that to the south in gault brick, the other in red brick. Rear completely demolished and closed by a full-length mid 20th century brick wall. The lathing of the front and insertion of the frieze has been dated to a new owner in 1703.
