Summary

In an 18th century gravel pit Roman pottery and burnt animal bone and medieval fragments of pottery were recovered.

Site XXIV 30m (100 feet) OD.

1951 In filling of shallow depression in top of 18th century gravel pit.
In field east of Fox's Grove.
Claudian pottery with fragments of cremated animal bone, heavily fired clay, charcoal. ?Burials. Implies existence of town prior to AD 61. Silence of Tacitus not an insuperable difficulty. ?Destruction of native town an anticlimax.

In Frozen Field, on Roman pottery site.
Large deposit of iron bound conglomerate removed by bulldozer: outcropped at base of ploughsoil, in a layer around 20cms thick. At least 1 ton removed, now in a rockery.
