Summary

Large amounts of ironworking slag were found by ploughing in 1979. Examination of these suggests that some of the pieces were iron blooms - the unrefined product of iron smelting. Excavation of the site in summer 1979 revealed the presence of an iron smelting furnace. The site has not been dated.

Map

1978 and 1979. Found in ploughing.
Large quantities of iron tap slag.

17 May 1979. Site visit.
Huge lump of bloom, not tap slag, now moved into coppice to east. Around 1.5m across, 0.5m deep, roughly bun-shaped, with organ-pipe formation. Another piece, still on findspot on edge of ploughed field, slightly smaller is of the same shape but with one flat side with wormcast formation. In edge of wood by this is a smaller lump discovered in 1969, with the nose of the ploughshare that it broke off! No sherds or any other indication on ploughed field. Field has been ploughed every year for at least twenty five years and only on these two occasions have lumps been found.
E. Rose (NAU).

(S1) suggest that a small area was excavated in June 1979, and a furnace was found.
No further details or archive found (January 2001).
D. Gurney (NLA), 29 December 2000.
