Full Description
North side of Acle Dyke. Pillbox approx location from [1]
E. Rose, (NAU) 25 November 1980.
There is now no trace of any defensive position in this area, nor no sign that there ever was one.
E. Rose (NLA), 6 October 2001.
It is said locally that motor torpedo boats were built in sheds at this locality, so a defensive position may have been associated.
E. Rose (NLA), 9 November 2001.
2001. The World War Two remains around Acle constitute a system of national importance.
See (S1).
D. Gurney (NLA), 27 December 2001.
May 2007. Norfolk NMP.
NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TG 411 107 to TG 4115 1069.
The pillbox described above is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs (S1)-(S4). It has also been recorded by the Defence Areas Project (S5). It appears to have been a Type 22. Whether it was specifically sited to protect the suggested torpedo boat site (see above) or boat patrol base (see (S5) and Acle parish file) is not known. Modern Ordnance Survey mapping, which places the pillbox within Acle Dike itself, would suggest that its site has been utterly destroyed, presumably when the dike’s northern bank was cut back.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 18 May 2007.
