Summary

This chalk pit contained two lime kilns. The western kiln had two entrances to a tunnel, with a barrel-vaulted room off the tunnel. The roof has collapsed. The east kiln was in better condition with two entrances and a very small door to a possible draught passage. The building were thought unsafe in 1995 and were going to be filled in.

Chalk pit with two lime kilns - on (S1). One is marked as 'disused' and one in use. Kiln also marked on (S2). The western kiln has two entrances to tunnel, north and south. The roof has fallen. There is a barrel vaulted room off. The east kiln is in better condition, two entrances and also a very small door to a passage 1m high - for draught?

1992.
[1] noted that both kilns were 'beyond hope of rescue'. Rubbish has been tipped over them.

1995.
Remains of both kilns survive in pit. Very overgrown and in poor condition. Intention to infill pit Planning Permission granted.

The site is marked on 1ins O.S. maps 1838 (S2), the Tithe map 1844 (S4) and the 6ins O.S. map 1884 (S5) marks both kilns, 1 being disused. The site is also noted in White's Directory 1836-1890 (S6) and Kelly's 1853-1916 (S7)
