Full Description
1976.
Cropmarks of unusual ditches, apparently boundaries of some sort of enclosures, one large with a gateway or crossing; all crossed by mark presumably of trackway (site NHER 1973), though on slightly different alignment than marked.
Located by E. Rose (NAU), 16 January 1978.
19 July 1994. NLA air photography.
Photographs indicate a broad curvilinear interrupted ditch co-joined to the north side of which are a series of small rectilinear enclosures. Also to the north of these features is a rectangular enclosure, which appears to have traces of a double ditch. The interrupted ditch is cut by a trackway, maybe relating to NHER 1973. To the south of the main group of enclosures is a ring ditch which has one straight stretch of ditch.
S. Massey (NLA), 30 April 2001.
April 2026. Northwest Norfolk Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
Fragmentary enclosures, part of a trackway and a more substantial boundary ditch, described above, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The trackway probably marks the course of a post medieval road (NHER 1973) depicted on Faden’s 1797 Map of Norfolk (S3). It is probable that the features are of medieval to post medieval date, but they cannot currently be dated more precisely, and it is not known whether they are all contemporary with each other. The enclosures may represent small fields or paddocks.
The more substantial boundary ditch, visible between TF 8579 3897 and TF 8591 3898, is presumed to correspond with the interrupted ditch described above. Like the fragmentary enclosures visible mainly to its north, some of the gaps may be genuine entrances or other interruptions, but many are likely to be truncations by later activity. The Ordnance Survey 2nd edition 25 inch map (S4) marks this area as allotments, and shows two north-south oriented boundaries and/or tracks crossing the area; this later land use almost certainly contributed to the fragmentary nature of the cropmarks. The ring ditch described above corresponds with a post medieval to modern tree clump depicted on the Tithe Map (S5). Some of these later elements are visible on aerial photographs (S6 to S7); they have not been mapped by the project.
