Location

Map sheet TG24SW
Civil Parish CROMER, NORTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

Ring ditch visible on RAF air photographs.
A. Lawson (NAU).

No sign in field of young cereal.
A. Lawson (NAU) 2 February 1976.

December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
The possible barrow that had been previously identified on aerial photographs was not mapped during the NMP. Although a feature having the appearance of a ploughed out barrow with an outer ditch was visible in later June 1946 (S1), it did not look particularly convincing on other available aerial photographs. It also had the appearance of glacial mound, when compared with similar features in the surrounding areas earlier in June 1946 (S2). The topographic setting of the site is also not what one would normally expect for a Bronze Age barrow.
S. Massey (NMP), 21 December 2004.

December 2005. Watching Brief.
Monioring of pipeline in area of cropmark only. Contexts 1-5.
No evidence of any features of archaeological interest was observed during the groundworks.
A few sherds of post medieval pottery and ceramic building material were recovered from the site.
See report (S3) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2009.212).
J. Allen (NLA), 16 February 2006. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 5 May 2019.
