Summary

Metal detecting in the 1980s and 1990s recovered a number of Roman objects, including coins and brooches, as well as a medieval decorated lock and a post medival plaque fragment. Excavation in 1988 also noted a Roman period hearth in a pit.

May-June 1988. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation prior to development of area in which scatter of Roman pottery and metal objects had previously been identified.
Finds recovered included:
Prehistoric worked flints and pottery sherds.
Roman pottery sherds, quern stone, coin and brooch.
Undatable silver sheet.
A pit with a clay lining was the only feature identifed. Although no traces of Roman buildings remained, the quality of the finds nevertheless suggests substantial domestic occupation.

The finds recovered during this work have been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1995.69).

1990. Found with metal detector.
Bronze 'book-shaped' decorated lock ?medieval, front plate only, with iron, corroded, on reverse. X-ray (s1) shows spring and two catches. Decoration is cast, and consists of diagonal lines and triangular zones.
