Medieval moat.
Shown as complex with traces of large rectangle with smaller rectangle apparently inside east half, so that two north arms run parallel close together.

The earthworks and soilmarks of the medieval moated site at Brettenham are visible on aerial photographs (S2-S7). The site is centred on TL 9328 8340. This site presumably represents a former manorial house and has been suggested as the former location of Shadwell Hall (NHER 6090), which is eighteenth century in date (although note the nearby seventeenth century Manor House farm (NHER 46164) to the west of the site). See NHER 54565 for nearby earthworks newly identified on aerial photographs that would appear to indicate associated medieval land boundaries and potentially areas of settlement.
The aerial photographs reveal a conjoined pair of rectangular moated enclosures, both of which have internal banked and raised areas or platforms. The plan is broadly consistent with the paced field survey undertaken of the site (S1). Soilmarks of former buildings can be seen within the southwestern enclosure at TL 9327 8339 (S5). No definite traces of buildings can be identified within the two well-defined moated enclosures. The interior of the southern enclosure is clearly raised and well compacted, suggesting the former presence of a structure, but no actual trace of it can be detected. The northern elongated enclosure has a possible oblong or trapezoidal compacted and/or raised area within the northeastern corner and it is probable that this relates to the location of another structure.
S. Horlock (NMP), 18 January 2011.
