Summary

In 1976 a lime kiln was discovered at this site, buried 3m deep. A map of 1883 depicts it as still in active use.

It is apparently the chalk pit associated with this kiln that contained a 'cavern' (presumably a chalk tunnel) that Humphrey Repton considered a desirable feature of the view from Bracondale Lodge.

The site is referenced in several directories, notably White's (S3) from 1836 to 1883. This site is markes on Tithe maps 1844 (S4) and on the 25ins O.S. map 1881 (S1). Later editions 1914-1926 do not show the kiln, only a wooded pit.
