Map

Observations made when converted to a restaurant.
Building on site shown on 1680 groundplan (S1), adjacent space vacant but infilled by time of 1725 map. Street frontage rooms apparently postdate rear rooms, suggesting front and rear ranges once completely separate as found in Norwich.
Information from A. Carter (KLAS).
Ogee stops on bressumer may suggest 16th/17th century date. Former Blue Lion inn, known as Hanging Chains from huge bark weighing chains outside for Gaywood tanneries, afterwards given to Greenland Fishery Museum.
See (S2) in file by E.M. James (KLM) 15 January 1986.
E. Rose (NAU), 20 October 1986.

(S3) states the steelyard was in use from 1690 to 1883 and was removed in 1913. KLM has an account book 1862-1882. The supporting beams for the steelyard remain inside.
E. Rose (NLA), 2 January 2007.

The public house was known as The Blue Lion and popularly as The Hanging Chains. It was closed by compensation in 1912.
Information from (S4).
A. Cattermole (King's Lynn UAD), 22 November 2018.
