Full Description
In former park west of Hall, previous occupants said a rectangular cropmark appeared every Spring which they called a 'fort'.
Information given to E.Rose (NAU), 3 August 1977.
August 2006. Norfolk NMP
A cropmark of a rectangular enclosure, possibly a post medieval garden feature, is visible on aerial photographs (S1). This cropmark is located at TM 3972 9243. The enclosure is rectangular in plan and measures up to 37m north to south by 26m west to east. Only three sides of the enclosure are present with the eastern side formed by the garden wall of Geldeston Hall. The main part of enclosure appears as a parchmark up to 3m wide that is likely to represent a wall. A narrow ditch with rounded corners is also present along the north and west sides of the enclosure. It is likely that this is the cropmark referred to above although its location is slightly different. The ‘fort’ cropmark was originally recorded at TM 3970 9245. The position and alignment of this enclosure strongly suggests that it is related to Geldeston Hall (NHER 10666). The hall was constructed in 1777 and it is likely that the enclosure is a garden terrace or similar feature of post medieval date. Although it is unlikely that the cropmarks relate to a fort, an earlier origin predating the hall cannot be completely ruled out.
