Summary

In 1988 some footings of a building, consisting of red bricks set in clay, were noted on this site. The bricks were thought to be of the late 18th or early 19th century. Aerial photography of this area indicates a large rectangular parchmark on this site. There is also a surviving barn of the late 17th or 18th century, constructed of red brick English bond, with later Flemish bond gables. It was damaged by a bomb in World War Two, and scars remain on the brickwork and a piece of bomb casing was still embedded in lintel of door in 1988.

Map

In vineyard southeast of barns, east of modern farmhouse, footings uncovered at depth of about 6 inches (15cm) just below topsoil. Red bricks set in clay, resembling footing of wall, with curving line of bricks at right angles across clay. Bricks seem late 18th century or early 19th century. Field ploughed since 1920s at least. Nothing here on 1928
25 inch Orndance Survey, but undated aerial photograph in Unit collection shows large white rectangle at this spot. Flint footings reported further east in field but not seen.
One barn is late 17th or 18th century red brick English bond, with later Flemish bond gables. Damaged by bomb in World War Two. Scars remain on brickwork and piece of bomb casing still embedded in lintel of door.

March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
There is no convincing sign of the parchmark to the previously recorded to the southeast of the house on (S1). To the west of the main cluster of buildings is a probable area of bomb damage (S2), as mentioned above, with possible evidence of levelled structures, probably agricultural although could be of post medieval date like the other foundations recorded on site, and possible traces of boundaries, although the snow cover on the ground makes identification of actual features hard. An extent of area has been added to the site to show the location of these possible features. Additional possible fragmentary banked and ditched boundaries may be visible under the snow cover to the west of the house, but were not mapped due to uncertainty over the archaeological nature of the earthworks and the fact that they could relate to relatively recent features.
S. Horlock (NMP), 24 March 2009
