Full Description
26 March 1986. Site visit by E. Rose (NAU).
Structurally one house. Single storey and dormers. Main façade to the southeast. Flint and brick walling, but gables are timber framed with visible studwork to the northeast and weather boarded to the southwest, set above very thick gable walls (which have been in part rebuilt in late brickwork). The façade has three late windows, and doorcase, with two eyebrow dormers above in thatched roof (described as 'unusual round headed casements' in Listing). In walling below these and above ground floor openings are various brick features including a small blocked window with toothed brick quoins, and a blocked brick-edged slit. Listed as 17th century and later, the house has similarities to Acle Bridewell (dated to 1633 - NHER 12197). A local advertising newspaper in 1986 (details unknown) referred to a local legend that the Midland Bank opposite, an 18th century thatched house, was 'an old prison'. That building shows no trace of having been such - does the story really refer to this building?
