Summary

A possible medieval or post medieval moat or pond is present as a water-filled feature. It is U-shaped in plan and extends for 65m by 35m in total. It is possible that this is a medieval moat, but it could be a pond or fishpond of medieval to post medieval date.

Map

Moat? U-shaped water-filled feature, open end to south, narrow island wooded, marked on (S1). However, (S2) shows this as more regular with narrower ditches, and road passing between south end and adjacent barns to south, recently closed off when map made. Seems more possible as an oval moat on this map.

According to [1] this is a 17th century feature. At its south end was formerly a building, Primrose Farm, which is locally reported to have had 'vaulting like a church' in the cellars. This survived to about 1950.

A possible medieval or post medieval moat or pond is visible on aerial photographs (S3). It is located at TG 4920 1498. The possible moat comprises a U-shaped water-filled feature. It measures up to 65m long by a 35m wide in total. Each of the two arms of the U shape is up to 11m wide. This feature is apparently depicted on the 1842 enclosure map (see above). It is possible that it is a medieval moat, but could equally be a pond or fishpond. The trackway referred to above is actually the line of a medieval road (see NHER 18320).
