Map

Opposite St George's Park east of Nelson Road Central.
Site of South Windmill.
Marked on (S1).
Existed in 1770 and marked on (S2), but not there in 1851.
See (S3).
E. Rose (NAU) 29 January 1980.

Also known as Whitemill and Chapel Denes.
Last used 1846.
Body moved to North Denes in 1850 where it became Greengrass Mill (NHER 15104).
E. Rose (NAU) 26 March 1982.

(S4) states that the winding shape of Crown Road is due to it being diverted round a house, standing where the east end of the park now is, to reach a windmill at the junction of Crown Road and Nelson Road Central as now is.
As (S1) to (S5) do not mention a second mill, perhaps the grid reference given is slightly too far south.
E. Rose (NLA 27 February 1998.

(S5) gives yet another grid reference, TG 5288 0742, and calls it Hovells Mill, and states that it was 'believed to be a postmill of 1796' when it was removed to the North Denes as described above.
E. Rose (NLA), 22 October 2003.
