Full Description
March 1980. Wood Green, north of ditched area called moat by [1]. Really drainage?
Fieldwalking after ploughing.
Large numbers of late medieval/early post medieval ware.
Few medieval sherds, one applied thumb decorated base.
Glazed brick fragments.
Oyster shell.
Fragment copper alloy sheet.
Much lead glazed earthenware.
Few stoneware.
Clay pipe fragments.
Identified by W. Milligan (NCM) 24 March 1981.
(S1) explains that she means the ditch that encloses the entire field within which this find was made. Here she only says that its arms are 'as wide as a moat' and implies it is an area of early settlement taken out of the green. The size would certainly be huge for a moat, and a drainage ditch aound a late medieval settlement would seem more probable.
E. Rose (NAU) 5 June 1985.
