Summary

In 1961 part of a decorated Early Saxon bowl was recovered from this area, sitting on a bed of charcoal-stained earth and containing fragments of cremated human bone and pieces of fused copper-alloy. A piece of Late Saxon pottery has also been recovered from this site.

1961. Field Observation.
Part of decorated Early Saxon bowl found at depth of 2 ft 6 inches (0.8m) in digging sewer trench for new house. Found sitting on bed of charcoal-stained earth 4 inches (10cm) thick in which were pieces of white bone (probably cremated) and fragments of fused bronze. Plain hand-made sherd presumably Early Saxon found at 30 inches (0.7m) at side of flint-clay cairn (see record NHER 1530).
