Summary

The earthworks of a medieval moat with associated field boundaries, possible enclosures, a pond and ridge and furrow are visible on aerial photographs, recent (2017) visualised lidar data and recorded from field visits. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently it is likely that the earthworks still survive. It is possible that the features may relate to the site of a former medieval manor. The northern arm of the moat forms the southern boundary of the churchyard associated with St Mary's church (NHER 4093).

March 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The earthworks of a medieval moat with associated field boundaries, possible enclosures, boundary banks, boundary ditches, ridge and furrow, a pond, and possible drainage ditches are visible on aerial photographs and recent (2017) visualised lidar data (S5-S22). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently it is likely that the earthworks still survive. It is possible that the features may relate to the site of a former medieval manor. The earthworks of a mound (centred at TF 8938 1518) and a hollow (centred at TF 8940 1520) are also visible on S21. The function of the features is uncertain. However, the features most likely relate to the moated site. Although the majority of the features are most likely medieval in date, a post medieval date for some of the features cannot be ruled out. The monument polygon has been slightly amended to the location of the features as visible on S21.
