Full Description
December 1950. Listed, Grade II.
February 1980. Field Observation.
Visited by E. Rose (NAU).
Tall carriage arch supported on solid arched brackets at street end, with another in centre. Large beams in ceiling of this are rough-cut. House on east side of passage has visible timber framing to upper floor. Lower storeys in flint and modern brick. 16th-century.
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU), 13 February 1980. Information from record card (S1).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 21 March 2022.
Revised listing 1994 notes that rear wing is jettied as well as main block with exposed timbering. Ground floor has plain timber ceilings; upper floors not seen.
December 1997. Field Observation.
Revisited by E. Rose (NLA).
Bressumer of carriage arch has concave moulding: brackets are ovolo moulded anbd spring from posts. Edwardian shop front obscures east part of bressumer. Central beam in ceiling of arch rests on post in house wall to east but on bracket on painted brick wall to west. Above the bracket is the first floor hearth supported on bricks and iron straps, with a chimney above on gable rising above next building. Rear wing is indeed jettied with reduced first floor window and wattle and daub infill; old stack
at former south gable. Ground floor interior now has fake timbering. Said to be infilled cellar and two tie or bridging beams at first floor in rear wing but these not seen.
Compiled by E. Rose (NLA), 15 December 1997.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 March 2022.
April 1998. Building Survey.
Examined again by E. Rose (NLA).
16th-century jettied street range incorporating carriage arch. Rear wing perhaps same date but structural details may suggest an addition perhaps of early 17th century.
See report (S2) for further details.
Compiled by E. Rose (NLA), 27 April 1998. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 21 March 2022.
March-May 2014. Historic Building Recording.
Basic record made during alterations to first floor and rear of structure. The work undertaken included the demolition of outbuildings and the remains of a former bread oven at the rear of the building and the construction of a two-storey extension.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 November 2015.
