Summary

A post medieval pottery kiln of probable 16th to 17th century date was identified as a low earthwork mound and spread of material on the field surface after ploughing in the 1970s. The kiln showed as a mound approximately 12m diameter and 0.30m high with burnt red clay and bricks on the surface. There was a scatter of medieval and post medieval pot fragments around it. Some prehistoric flint flakes and a fragment of Roman quern were also found in the field. Fieldwalking and metal detecting at this site have recovered more medieval pottery, kiln furniture and a medieval buckle and two medieval copper alloy rings.

Several mounds of unknown date and origin are visible as earthworks in this field, on visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2017 (S2). One of these may correspond with the post medieval pottery kiln described above, but too little locational information is available to be certain which one, if any. As a consequence, no features have been mapped for this site. Some of the unevenness evidence in this field on the lidar data is probably of natural origin.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 29 June 2023.
