Summary

This is the site of a Late Saxon settlement which declined in the medieval period. Prehistoric flints and fragments of Late Saxon, medieval and post medieval pottery have been found during fieldwalking.

11 November 1984. Hales site 147. Fieldwalking on sandy soil, coarse, conditions good.
Three divisions of field:
Context 1 north section; moderate concentrations abou8t 50m north to south, 4 jar rims, 1 sherd with rouletted decoration, and 3 flat base Thetford type, 3 early medieval jar rims and 1 ginger jar rim.
4 medieval unglazed rims.
33 sherds medieval unglazed but including about 50% Thetford type.
14 post medieval mostly glazed red earthenware.
Context 2 = southern section, much scantier distribution but not just manure.
1 base and 1 sherd Over-fired Thetford type.
2 Early medieval jar rims.
2 sherds medieval unglazed.
1 base probably ditto.
1 glazed red earthenware.
Context 3 central section.
9 post medieval to 19th century.
1 undated reduced with footring.
4 flint tools.
