Summary

The present brick building is of two periods. The owner states that these date from 1747 when the house was erected by C. Rooper, a surgeon, and 1865 when it was extended, given a new facade and partly reclad, and the evidence matches these dates.

Present brick building is of two periods: owner states that these date from 1747 when the house was erected by C. Rooper, a surgeon, and 1865 when it was extended, given a new facade and partly reclad. These dates fit what is visible. Interesting cellar with rows of shaped brick niches and wine bins. Probably of 1747 though extending beyond original house. Brick water vaults said to exist beneath garden. Generally the house is not of much interest visibly, but older section has massive chimney-breast. In closet beside it on upper floor is visible an expanded-topped post
with part of a large tie beam attached not to the top as it should be, but to the post below the expansion. Is it an arched brace slipped out of position? These features may indicate that Mr. Rooper may have adapted an older
house of some interest.

Fireplace on south of massive stack mentioned above removed. Behind, remains of 19th century range supports. Wide original flue too sooting to date accurately, but need not necessarily be pre 1747.
