Summary

A medieval to post medieval road is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs and as a partial earthwork on visualised lidar data from 2018. It appears to be a continuation of Glebe Road in Halvergate parish to the east. It is marked on 18th and 19th century maps.

Cropmarks of a medieval to post medieval road are visible on aerial photographs (S1). The central grid reference for these cropmarks has been amended to TG 4066 0650. A faint positive linear cropmark extends for just over 400m on a curving roughly west to east alignment. It is flanked by cropmarks of broad banks. The alignment of these cropmarks corresponds to that of a road shown on the county maps by Faden (1797) (S2) and Bryant (1826) (S3). It continues further to the east in Halvergate parish as a surviving track called Glebe Road. It is likely that this road is of medieval to early post medieval date.

The western end of the medieval to post medieval road described above is visible as an earthwork on visualised lidar data (S4). Google Earth imagery from 2006 (S5) shows both the road and several other linear features in the surrounding field. The latter mostly appear to be late post medieval in date, and in are in some cases depicted on readily accessible maps, such as the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch (S6), so have not been included in the record, but it is possible that some have earlier origins.
