Summary

A large fragment of flint walling of possible medieval date. It could be part of the church of St Helen (NHER 6631) which is nearby, moved either when the church was demolished in 1890 or during World War Two. However, it could also be the remains of a small farm building.

Map

Before August 1987. Field Observation.
Large fragment of flint walling with buttress. Wall aligned east to west, flints, well coursed, apparently medieval.
Mistaken for ruins of church when first found by [1]. Nothing marked on 1926 25 inch Ordnance Survey map (S3) or 6 inch Ordnance Survey map (S2); stands just within field northeast of true church site (NHER 6631). It is possibly part of the ruins reset here when material was removed in 19th century to build the present West Beckham church.
Information from [1].
E. Rose (NAU), 7 August 1987.

January 1988. Field Observation.
Flint footing about 1 foot (30cm) thick, in form of half H surrounding cattle trough, but buttress not seen.
Though unusually thick, there is no other evidence of ecclesiastical origin. It seems very narrow for, as an example, a tower base but perhaps could be a porch. [1] says local people state parts of church ruins were moved by the army with a bulldozer in World War Two; but is this rather just the foundation of a small farm building?
E. Rose (NAU), 6 January 1988.

February 2026. HER Enhancement: Forestry Commission Project K.
It is uncertain whether this section of flint wall is still extant. The area is obscured on Google Street View (S4).
Several fragments of medieval pottery and one medieval coin have been recovered from this field, and other possible earthworks related to a medieval building were observed in 1935 - see NHER 6403.
H. Hamilton (HES), 23 February 2026.
