Summary

Excavations here in 1846 uncovered a 3rd century Roman building. Finds included wall plaster, brick tesserae and human and animal bone. A Roman road (NHER 9816) was found next to the building.

Site XXI. Site of house in garden of Caistor Hall.
Building 7.3m by 9.15m (24 feet x 30 feet) internally three apertures 75cm (2 1/2 feet) long in north and south walls faced on both sides with flint. Probably 3rd century.
Wall plaster, brick tessera, tiles.
Human and animal bones.
Coins.
Samian and other pottery.
Samian stamp (O)FPRIMI (late 1st century).

Remains were apparently left exposed in a flint revetted trench, which has now silted up over them. Owner of hall referred to them as 'Boadicea's Bath'.

6 July 2021. Site Observation.
Members of the Caistor Roman Project visited the site with the new owners of Caistor Hall Hotel and grounds. The Scheduled Monument lies in an area of mature Rhododendrons and areas of flint walls are evident. Significant weathering and root damage to these walls and animal disturbance of the surrounding area was observed.
