Map

1951. Stray Find.
North of High House:
Neolithic surface flint site "with Mesolithic tendencies". Finds donated to Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1951.170 : A). Information from (S1).

Flints listed in (S2) as Mesolithic include 1 flaked axehead, 1 pick, 5 cores and 2 blades/flakes. This assemblage was also examined by R. Jacobi, with the potentially Mesolithic pieces listed in (S3) as 1 small ?unfinished axehead, 1 pick, 2 blade cores, 1 flake core, 2 flake/blade cores, 2 irregular blades and 7 scrapers. Jacobi notes that although these finds had previously been classed as Mesolithic, there was nothing in the assemblage that was clearly so.

Although this material was originally recorded as Neolithic (both by (S1) and the NCM's records) it appears unlikely that any pieces of definite Neolithic date are present. No diagnostic tools are listed in (S4) and Jacobi makes no reference to any flints of probable Neolithic date.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 15 May 2014.
