Summary

A medieval timber framed and jettied house, dated by tree rings to felling in 1401, built on the site of an earlier house. The house is moated, and the moat may date from the 13th century. The Conduit is a waterfilled channel leading to the moat, built in late 16th century brick. Blomefield describes the ruins of a bath house next to the Conduit in the early 18th century.

Timber framed and jettied house of about 1500 with dragon beam, moated.
Built on the site of an earlier hall, moat may date from 13th century.

Late 16th century brick vaults containing springs known as The Conduit.
Blomfield mentions the ruins of a bathing house and summerhouse close to The Conduit in 1739. Beyond the bath house he describes a open square bath with an arch leading to the moat.

Monitoring of excavation of pad base pits for new footbridges across moat south of Boyland Hall.
The four small pits opened revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits.
Finds were limited to a small number of post-medieval brick and tile fragments.

September 2020. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with erection of detached garage at southern end of moated complex, adjacent to Tinkers Barn.
The excavations were relatively shallow, with the base of a thick subsoil deposit only reached in one small area. As a result, no archaeologically significant features or deposits were recorded.
Only finds of obviously modern date were observed (these were not retained).
