Summary

A Mesolithic or later perforated quartzite pebble macehead and part of a ?medieval leather sheath were found during the excavation of foundations for a new bridge over the River Yare in the mid 19th century.

Found while digging for foundations of 'New' Haven Bridge; in bed of shingle 10' [3m] east of quayhead about 20' [6m] below surface:
1 ?medieval leather sheath fragment. See (S1). Information from (S2) (copy of older record card).

June 1851. Stray Find.
Found in River Yare during excavations for new bridge:
1 prehistoric perforated quartzite pebble of rectangular outline measuring 3 1/2" [8.89cm] x 2 1/2" [6.35cm]. Held by Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1894.76.838). See (S1) and (S3). Also noted in (S4), (S5) and (S6). Information from (S7).

An example of what would now be described as a pebble macehead. Although this implement is listed in both (S8) and (S9) objects of this type are not closely datable, having been found in both Mesolithic and later prehistoric contexts.
