Map

Medieval moated site.
South side wide and waterfilled mostly, but may have extended as far east as road, where a dry hollow now is.
West side narrower, dry at present though has been wet in recent years probably filled in somewhat.
North side gone, now under corn field.
East side may be represented by ditch along garden boundary, but this would not meet the suggested extension of south side.
Interior well banked up.
House, Waterfield Cottage, has thatched roof, central chimney and some old beams, it could be 17th century but has been totally modernised.
Visited E. Rose (NAU) 28 September 1978.

1986. Building Survey.
Detailed interior survey and drawings of house by Brooke Society.
See report (S1) for details.
The conclusion reached by them is that this is a medieval open hall extended at an early date with later inserted upper floor and stack.
However, drawings show main ceiling beam is supported on bracket carved integrally with wallpost.
There are ovolo mullioned upper windows, and the plan is lobby entrance.
Without seeing the building, the record seems to suggest a two storeyed lobby entrance house of about 1600.
E. Rose (NAU) 24 November 1986.

(S2) this latter analysis, dating the building to the early 17th century, 2 cell lobby entrance with late 17th century cell added.
It describes the ground floor mullioned window as having cavetto moulding.
Interior has arched braces to wallplate, cambered beams and joists: rebates for shutters on both ground and first floors. Brick fireplace.
Windbraces.
17th century balusters brought from Oldhall Farm.
E. Rose (NLA) 25 November 1998.
