Summary

Observation of service trenches revealed substantial north-south and east-west walls constructed of red brick, clunch and carstone. These appear to be the foundations of two small cottages built on the same tenement in the late 13th or early 14th century and fronting onto Sedgeford Lane.

Map

1963-1970 (at some time). Systematic observation and recovery during excavation of service trenches.
A T-junction of an east-west and a north-south wall of one build lay on foundation trenches filled with gravel and sand. These walls were similar to the north-south wall recorded to the east (NHER 1213) having been constructed of red brick, clunch and carstone. Patches of floor levels were seen on both sides of the north-south wall and cobbling south of the east-west wall. These walls probably defined two small cottages, each measuring 3.8m (12 ft 6 in) by 6.4m (21 ft), both on the same tenement. These features were dated by the excavator to the late 13th or early 14th century.
The only finds from this site were two Grimston jugs and a few cooking pot sherds.
