Map

Old post office.
17th century, flint façade and west gable, two storeys; two pedimented windows on ground floor on south, and one on first floor and attic floor in west gable wall. East gable rebuilt in modern brick; gabled wing at rear. Much restored. Late 19th century photo, reproduced in (S3), appears to show a stepped gable on west now gone, but print is very faint.
Visited E. Rose 30 August 1975, and 9 July 1978.

Bridewell museum has a room panelled with Tudor panelling 'from a house at Lakenham'. D. Jones states no record at museum as to which house. Possibly this one as it is the only remaining house in village which externally is early 17th century; but also possible it comes from a house now demolished.
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU), 26 October 1982.

Photograph pre 1908, reproduced in file, shows façade as now and no trace of a steeped gable.
Press cutting (S4) in file.
Compiled by E. Rose (NLA), 20 March 2000.

See additional press cuttting (S5) in file.
T. Sunley (NLA) 6 November 2007.

Yes indeed the panelling does come from a demolished house and not this one, see NHER 40553.
E. Rose (NLA), 5 July 2004.

(S6) in file dates to around 1500 but as the description goes on to quote early 17th century parallels and ends up by assigning a 17th century date this is probably a misprint for 1600.
E. Rose (NLA), 30 April 2005.
