Summary

A number of prehistoric worked flints were recovered in this field prior to 1961, including a Late Upper Palaeolithic blade core and rare 'penknife point'; Mesolithic blade cores; Early Neolithic leaf arrowheads and laurel leaves and a variety of Neolithic implements including arrowheads, discoidal knife, adze and polished axehead. The Late Upper Palaeolithic finds found in this field and the area immediately to the south (NHER 14950) represent a significant concentration.

Map

Pre 1961. Stray Find.
Finds recovered by R. F. Parrott in "field east of Brickkiln Farm" (centred TL 786 891):
6 Early Neolithic flint leaf arrowheads and 7 laurel leaves.
8 Neolithic petit tranchet derivative flint arrowheads (5 transverse and 3 oblique), 1 triangular arrowhead, 1 long-pointed piercer, 1 flaked discoidal knife, 1 fragmentary polished flint axe and 1 flaked flint adze.

Finds recovered by R. F. Parrott in "field north of Brickkiln Farm" (listed in (S1) as centred TL 787 895, but probably the area immediately to the north of Brickkiln Farm):
1 Neolithic flaked discoidal knife, 1 serrated flake, 2 flaked flint axes and 1 fragmentary end-polished flint axe.

Finds seen by F. Healy (NAU) and listed in (S1). Initially noted on (S2). The finds themselves are part of the Parrott Collection which was previously on loan to the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1961.142) but is now housed at Weeting Primary School.

The Parrott Collection is also known to include:
1 Late Upper Palaeolithic flint blade core (Coll. No. 741c) and 1 curved back blade ('penknife' point) found east of Brickkiln Farm.
2 Mesolithic flint blade cores found "north of Brickkiln Farm" (one Col. No. 673b).
These objects are described in (S3) and the majority of the Upper Palaeolithic pieces are also listed in (S4). The 'penknife point' is probably one of those marked on a distribution map in (S5). See NHER 5722 for details of a similar 'penknife point' found at Thetford.
It is also noted in (S4) that this collection includes 2 Late Upper Palaeolithic flint blades that were found in the vicinity of Brick Kiln Farm. It is unclear whether these were from this site or NHER 14950 to the south.
