Map

1973. On Ordnance Survey vertical air photograph. Earthworks east of Hall Street
Earthworks of two linked square enclosures.
A. Gregory (NAU), 1974 from photographs supplied by [1].

23 February 1982. Visit.
The earthworks are drawn on NCM map as a square with rounded corners and a central gap in its northern side, and a line running from its southeast corner to the north-east corner of a smaller square to the south. Site is a pasture field. No trace on ground of any earthworks except that the interior of the northern square is raised about 0.5m above rest of field, and linking arm exists as an irregular waterfilled ditch. No trace at all of ditches of northern enclosure, or of any part of southern. Were these in fact cropmarks, not earthworks, might in this case indicate a moated site. Stream to north is crossed by a brick arch in centre of field probably about 1800. Protruding through grass in northern enclosure was found a fragment of Niedermendig lava quern approximately 20cm long x 6cm wide x 5cm thick, curving 'rim' fragment.
E. Rose (NAU), 23 February 1982.

Cropmarks confirmed (not earthworks); slightly different alignment from as drawn by A. Gregory (NAU), the northern enclosure has since had one corner removed by a new house.
Air photograph seen by D. Edwards (NAU) and E. Rose (NAU), March 1982.

January 2003.
Slight rise seen in pasture field to north. Several area of grass covered heaps, presumably dumping of soil. Brick arch, mentioned in 1982, collapsed several years ago, according to local resident. Sale board advertising building of 84 houses.
H. Paterson (A&E), 30 January 2003.
