Full Description
September 1976 and early April 1977. At base of cliff in apparently recently collapsed soil.
Sherds recovered from gravel pit.
Rim of very hard dark grey pottery. Said to have come from a feature filled with black soil. Apparently medieval; hint of a pouring lip, more like a shallow bowl than a jug.
A. Rogerson (NAU) (reported May 1977).
Examination of quarry on 10 April located two further features filled with brown sandy loam, but no sign of pottery.
Sherds identified by A. Gregory (NAU) as one-sixth of a shouldered narrow-necked jar/pedestal urn mid-late 1st century AD, and base sherd of a smaller pot.
From the same pit at a different date came a Neolithic chipped flint tool of the type sometimes known as a 'pseudo-handaxe'. See drawing (S1).
Information from [1].
P. Wade-Martins (NAU) 14 April 1977.
More Roman sherds found throughout rest of year (1977).
Bone identified as femur of immature cow.
[1] also found a puddingstone upper quern, badly broken, apparently originally 28cm diameter, hopper 8.5cm diameter, 9cm deep; total depth 13cm. Conical side handle hole only penetrates 5cm, does not pierce hopper.
Given to [2].
Information from NCM.
