Summary

In 1966 a medieval stone coffin lid was found during ploughing. It was decorated with a cross similar to those recorded on two floor slabs in St Mary's Church (NHER 7091). The lid may have been mortared to a surround of bricks. Other pieces of stone were found nearby, one of which was painted red.

Purbeck grave slab found by ploughing 20-22.5cm deep (8-9in), 183m (200yds) southwest of St Mary's Church. Excavated by ploughman and found to be lying on a bed of 'flint cobbles' and surrounded by bricks about 2.5cm (1in) wide mortar along edges of slab presumably mortared to bricks. Decorated with cross - worn, (S2).
Two other pieces of Purbeck found nearby - one piece brought to NCM (red painted).

In Happisburgh church at west end either side of nave/tower arch were two slabs decorated with same type of cross and set into floor. Apparently same type of stone but dark and dirty.
