Summary

The earthwork of a possible Bronze Age round barrow was recorded here during field visits in 1976 and 1988. No evidence of a mound is visible at this location on visualised lidar data, from a survey flown in 2018. This suggests that either the feature has been levelled, or it is mislocated and the record refers to one of the other low mounds visible in this field on the lidar visualisations.

Map

Possible ploughed down barrow, showing as gravel mound in ploughed field. 36m diameter, 50cm high.
A. Lawson (NAU), 20 September 1976.

July 1988. Visit.
Under cereal crop near edge of field, swelling visible, less than 0.5m.
J.J. Wymer (NAU), 13 July 1988.

March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
No clear evidence for the earthwork mound of this round barrow was visible on aerial photographs at its recorded location. However, a cropmark of a ring ditch (NHER 43321) was observed 30m to its northeast. Although the cropmark ring ditch had a smaller diameter than the earthwork referred to above, it is possible that these are in fact the same monument.

No evidence of a mound is visible at this location on visualised lidar data, from a survey flown in 2018 (S1). This suggests that either the feature has been levelled, or it is mislocated and the record refers to one of the other low mounds visible in this field on the lidar visualisations. The reference above, from the field visit in 1988, that the mound is ‘near edge of field’ would suggest the latter, as the currently recorded location is closer to the middle of the field. A mound visible on the lidar in the northwest corner of the field, at TF 7414 3734 could instead be the mound referred to, but in the absence of further supporting evidence of its archaeological origin it has not been recorded in its own right, nor has the location for this record been amended. The suggestion above that the site may be the same as the ring ditch recorded a short distance to its northeast (NHER 43321) is unlikely to be correct, as the ring ditch in fact relates to a former extractive pit. See too NHER 11591 for further mounds in the south of the field.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 1 July 2025.
