Summary

The name 'Hills and Holes' often indicates an ancient iron-working site. Here, a number of deep water-filled pits and dry shallow ditches were noted but the lack of iron-stained soil suggests that iron working did not occur here. Further study showed that a number of the depressions here were pingoes.

Map

3 August 1978. Field Observation.
Visited by E. Rose (NAU).
'Hills and Holes' name often indicates an ancient iron-working site. Here, a number of deep water-filled pits and dry shallow ditches, covered in trees now being cleared by Forestry Commission. Forestry workers think probably not iron workings as no iron-staining has been found, though soil is sandy. Some of pits were reused as decoys before
afforestation, but original use unknown.
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU) 3 August 1978. Information from record card (S1).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 12 March 2023.

Source states these are pingoes; however note find of iron slag to west (NHER 33410).

October-November 2022. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of remedial works to ponds at TL 9606 9116 and TL 9604 9110, including the removal of sediment and the reworking of their upper margins.
No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were observed. The sediment removed was mostly recently accumulated material and the work on the margins of the ponds was generally insufficient to expose the underlying geological deposits.
No finds were recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 12 March 2023.
