Map

Before June 1971. Systematic observation and recovery.
The whole site was dug out to a depth of 0.9m (3 feet) by hand. Between visits the workmen collected almost every scrap of material including a large deposit of horn-cores. Despite the circumstances of its recovery the material found forms a consistent Period II group (1250-1350).
The medieval building at the front of the site had been destroyed with the exception of its side (north and south) walls, which lay directly beneath their modern replacements, and a few patches of floor levels.
Software and Grimston cooking pot sherds were found beneath a massive silt layer between 4m and 4.25m (13 and 14 feet) O.D. in a sewer trench, but most of the material came from a series of unsurfaced yards at the rear of the site.
This included sherds of Grimston cooking pot ((S1) Fig. 83, No.10), bowl (Fig 85, No. 2) and jug (Fig. 94, No. 4), Yorkshire jug (Fig. 94, No. 8; Fig. 96, No. 7), SW French jug (Fig. 102, Nos. 17, 18, 23), Lyveden jug (Fig. 97, No. 22) and one London-Type jug (Fig. 98, No.4). Two 'spinning-top' detached finials (Fig. 136, Nos. 4, 5), fragments of Software and Grimston curfews, and a Purbeck marble mortar (Fig. 147, No. 31) were also found in the yard levels.
The yard levels were cut by only one post medieval pit, which contained late Grimston (Fig. 105, No. 16), red wares (Figs. 108, 111, Nos. 61, 105) and Raeren stoneware.
