Summary

A sewer trench dug in 1970-1971 revealed evidence about the nature of the 'High Hills', an embankment that formed part of the medieval town's defences. The embankment may have been a natural feature of the salt marsh that surrounded the town.

Map

1970-1971. Systematic observation.
For most of its length a sewer trench dug along Blackfriars Road followed exactly the line of its precursor. At one point the lines diverged for a length of 2.4m to 3m (8 to 10 ft) and it was this that produced the evidence for the nature of the 'High Hills' (NHER 5486). The surface of the road was at 5.1m (17ft) O.D. and only 0.45m (18ins) below this was undisturbed brickearth-like material almost identical to that sectioned at Windsor Terrace (NHER 1233). Even allowing for degradation of its surface this bank was at least 0.75m (2.5ft) higher than the modern ground surface to north and south which is at about 3.9m (13ft) O.D.
For High Hills see NHER 5486.
