Full Description
21 April 1982. Site visit by E. Rose (NAU).
East side road north of Breckles church. Defensive position.
Rounded-roofed chamber cast over corrugated iron. Aligned northwest to southeast with entrance in west end and a cross passage in centre with door on northeast. Two stone footings at southeast end for stove or equipment. Identical
to those in Kelling area on north coast. Not often found inland. Does this give a clue to the location of the decoy airfield NHER 17484? NHER 17484 now located just to north - see that record.
Originally noted by A. Lawson (NAU).
E. Rose (NAU) 21 April 1982.
November 2012. Norfolk NMP.
The centre of the site has been amended from TL 9573 9464 to TL 9568 9466 as a result of the NMP mapping.
The defensive position described above was visible as an earthwork bank-covered structure with path beside on aerial photographs from 1946 (S1). It measures approximately 20m in length by up to 4m in width, and a path is visible running beside the structure. It is still extant, and an entrance on the northern side is clearly visible on photographs from 1958 (S2).
E. Ford (NMP), 15 November 2012.
