August 2007. Norfolk NMP
Earthworks and cropmarks possibly relating to medieval settlement are a visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The area of this site has been extended to include additional earthworks. Linear ditches are present forming incomplete enclosures along with ponds or extraction pits. These features are visible as earthworks in 1946 (S2) but the field had been partly ploughed and they were present as soilmarks by 1975 (S1). They are located immediately to the west of Longham church (NHER 7277) and it is possible that they relate to medieval to post medieval settlement and small fields.
J. Albone (NMP), 23 August 2007.

January 2025. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
A few features additional to the earthworks and cropmarks of possible medieval to post medieval settlement described above are possibly visible on aerial photographs from 1942 (S3). Laser copies of these photographs were consulted for the Norfolk ALSF NMP project (see entry from 2007 above) but may have been less clear than the digital scans used for the Wendling Beck and Fransham AIM project. Due to the difficulty of rectifying these scans, and the fact that they can’t be viewed in stereo and therefore the character of the visible features is uncertain, no additional features have been mapped for the site from these photographs. A few additional low earthwork banks have been added from the visualised lidar data (S4), and the extent of the Monument polygon extended to encompass these. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017), it is probable that the earthworks still survive. The recording of the additional features does not alter the interpretation of the site.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 17 January 2025.
