1968. Excavation.
On the site of The Barge Inn immediately north of The Duke's Head and which had been demolished to cellar floor levels. Excavation revealed building foundations dated to the pre 18th century, with a large flagstone passage which ran from the quay to a yard at the back of the premises, along the south side. There was a large front cellar 15ft east of the present building line. Beneath the brick floor, a fairly compact layer of dark earth with some cobble flints covering a 'tip' of oyster shells and dumps of animal bone, were recorded. Below this was a sloping foreshore covered with peat which was analysed, above this pottery dating from 1150 onwards was recovered, furthermore early medieval ware and three imported sherds - French, Ardenne and Rhineland were recovered.
Suggested in (S3) Hall Quay, formerly Foreland, was a marshy inlet between North and South Quays.
Site now republished in (S3), see (S4) for short summary.
E. Rose (NLA), 16 April 1992 amended by M. Langham-Lopez (HES), 11 July 2013.
