Summary

In 1978 a prehistoric worked flint and fragments of post-medieval clay tobacco pipe were found during a visit to this site. Metal-detecting in 2021 recovered a post-medieval lead weight. Cropmarks previously recorded under NHER 12847 are now detailed elsewhere.

THE CROPMARKS DESCRIBED BELOW ARE NOW RECORDED AS NHER 38476 (THREE RECTANGULAR ENCLOSURES), NHER 38483 (THE TRACKWAYS), NHER 38562 (TWO RING DITCHES) AND NHER 38563 (A POSSIBLE FIELD SYSTEM).

Cropmarks over this field include a circular mark, possibly another, and three trackways joining by two small rectangles.
Gas pipe laid 1978 along west side field, near to but not touching circular marks.

October 1978. Field Observation.
Site visited by E. Rose (NAU):
After topsoil removed - no trace of cropmarks, but ground very smeared.
No marks visible either in adjoining stubble.
Topsoil c.0.75m deep on sandy subsoil with many flints.
Only finds one possible fragment of flint worked flake, clay pipe stem (18th century?) and rib of cow?

Southwest ring ditch clearly visible.
Northeast ring ditch barely discernable.
Trackway visible.
Linear cropmarks (field boundaries?) visible.

The cropmarks described below are now recorded as NHER 38476 (three rectangular enclosures), NHER 38483 (the trackways), NHER 38562 (two ring ditches) and NHER 38563 (a possible field system).
