Summary

The British Museum holds a Palaeolithic flint flake that was found at "Stokesby Pit" at some time prior to 1968. It is thought that this pit was probably the quarry at this location, which was known locally as Hillborough Hole.

Map

Pre 1968. Stray Find.
Found at "Stokesby Pit"
1 unretouched Palaeolithic flint flake. Donated to British Museum.
Listed in (S1). Information from (S2).
It is noted on (S3) that this object could not be located by E. Rose (NAU) when working through the basements of the museum. It is however listed in the museum's current records (2011,8117.67).
This object is also noted on (S4) and in (S5).

Stokesby Pit is probably the same as Hilborough Hole, an old pit recorded as "Wrong Pit" on (S6). No significance need probably be attached to the 'borough' name, as this appears to be on a par with 'Hilly Holey'.
E. Rose (NAU) 16 November 1978. Information from (S3).

Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 8 April 2014.
