Summary

The cropmarks of a series of enclosures and fields arranged around a central trackway are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Whinmere Farm. The date of these cropmarks is unknown although it is possible that they are medieval to post medieval in date, as they appear to lead towards a field boundary still in use and are possibly associated with Whinmere Farm or Hall.

The cropmarks of a series of enclosures and fields arranged around a central trackway are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Whinmere Farm (S1-S3). The date of these cropmarks is unknown, although it is possible that they are medieval to post medieval in date, as they appear to lead towards a field boundary still in use and are possibly associated with Whinmere Farm or Whinmere Hall as it is marked on the 1797 Faden map (S4). The site is centred on TG 4019 2481. These boundaries appear to overlie an earlier set of ditches and a possible enclosure (NHER 45218), which may be late prehistoric in date. These boundaries are themselves overlain by the post medieval field boundaries recorded under NHER 38750.

The main component of the site is a trackway running from TG 4019 2500 to TG 4034 2463, defined by parallel ditches, 7m apart. To either side of this are a series of fields and enclosed areas, varying in size and shape from small elongated paddocks, measuring 60m across, to large open fields, up to 130m across. The enclosures and fields to the immediate northwest of the Whinmere Farm are generally smaller and more subdivided. It is possible that some of these are associated with an earlier layout of the farm or Hall grounds.
S. Massey (NMP), 31 October 2006.
