Map

Hollow way.
Old Norwich road course.
Narrower at west end where it parallels approach to church (and is filled in by new car park) it broadens out to east, curving round in a crescent shape but is very deep all the way, and lined by old trees.
E. Rose (NAU), 8 November 1978.

Sides of hollow way adjacent to carpark have been 'landscaped' to south with wooden horizontal post structures revetting the side, interspersed with shrubs. To north 4 small ornamental trees have been planted. Remainder of hollow to east shows some areas eroded by cattle trampling. Only two old trees remain on side.
H. Paterson (A&E), 3 December 1999.

April 2011. Norfolk NMP.
Three earthwork ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3), and a track is marked on the Ordnance Survey 2nd edition map (S4) in the location of the hollow way described above.
E. Bales (NMP), 27 April 2011.

August-October 2011. Watching Brief.
Maintained during excavation of drainage pipe runs and inspection pits around north, east and south sides of St Remigius' Church (NHER 9470).
Two drainage trenches were excavated northwards from the two northernmost inspection pits so that they could drain into this former hollow way. The excavation of the trenches through its southern bank revealed a small flint and mortar wall (under which the pipes were bored). The is presumed to have been the remains of an earlier churchyard boundary wall (or the footings for railings).
See report (S5) and NHER 65466 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 March 2022.
