Summary

A number of stone ridges are visible here that divide the field into five or six lots. Metal detecting on the site from 1997-2000 recovered a number of multi period objects. The most impressive finds were an Early Saxon buckle and a beautiful Roman glass centre-boss brooch with its multi-coloured glass intact.

Roman beautiful glass centre-boss brooch. Oval, it has a raised edge (now rather abraded) around a broad flat gilded border decorated with S-shaped stamps. In the centre is a conical glass setting within a raised collar; the glass is a dark maroon with white spots and, swirling out from the centre, a band or yellow with a bright red stripe down the centre. The reverse has a catchplate and a single bar lug, and is covered with a white-metal coating. It is rare to find one of these brooches with the glass intact, and rarer still to find one with multi-coloured glass. 2nd century AD.
