Summary

Fieldwalking in 1984 by the Fenland Survey recovered a small number of Roman and medieval pottery sherds from this field. Two concentrations of Roman pottery sherds and animal bone were also noted, on the west and top of a roddon in this field.

1 October 1984. Fieldwalking on deep ploughed surface.
Context 1: general scatter, odd scraps medieval pottery with odd fragments of Roman. WPP EO (S1)
Context 2: at 5219 1455. Sparse scatter Roman sherds, very sparse animal bone on gentle west slope roddon. Size of sherds might suggest plough is only just reaching deposit. 34m north to south x 20m east to west. WPP 84 (S2).
Context 3: at 5218 1470. Sparse to moderate scatter of Roman pottery with very sparse animal bone. Occasional patches of silt stained grey but may not be contemporary on top and west side of roddon. 61m north to south x 32m
east to west. WPP 85 (S3).
