Full Description
1985 to 1986. Hales Survey, Heckingham sites 34, 37, 41.
Subdivisions of one field.
Fallow ground, vegetables and cabbages.
Context 1. Site 34 in (S1).
Two flints: one flake and one very small discoidal core.
Two Roman greyware.
Ipswich sandy; two rims, seventeen body sherds.
Ipswich pimply; three rims, eighteen body sherds and one handle.
Thirteen Thetford type.
Forty two medieval unglazed.
Three medieval glazed.
Four late medieval/transitional.
Two post medieval stoneware.
Eleven glazed red earthenware.
Context 2. Site 37 in (S1).
One body sherd pimply Ipswich.
Four medieval unglazed.
Three glazed red earthenware.
Context 3. Site 41 in (S1).
One base pimply Ipswich.
One body sherd sandy Ipswich.
Two Thetford type.
One medieval unglazed.

Summer 1987.
Worn oval copper alloy coin, possibly 3rd century. Roman irregular.
Roughly circular double looped medieval gilt bronze harness pendant, central circular boss with six pointed star around it, points of star touching rim of outer circle, areas between points of star touching rim of outer circle.
Areas between points filled with stamped with circles. See (S2).

This area has been interpreted as a Middle Saxon settlement. Limited area northeast of churchyard.

This area has been interpreted as a Middle Saxon settlement. Field north of church.

This area has been interpreted as a medieval settlement. Site of important Middle Saxon concentration.
